Holiday Guests

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and today I learned that my Mom had decided to extend an invitation to her cousin from San Diego to join us this year.  Well Mom has only one guest room and Granny has first dibs on that.  So, it seems that cousin Ginny will be spending the weekend at my place.  Actually it has been a long time since I have seen her and I know it will be fun but the thought of cleaning out the guestroom is daunting.

My guestroom is really my storage room.  Whenever I need a place for something I throw it in the guestroom and close the door.  Now I can barely open the door to get in.  With this chore in mind I did a little research on tips for creating a “real guestroom” and I got some great ideas and I thought I would share them with you just in case you too have some holiday guests on their way.
·       De-clutter the room…that means all the stuff on the bed and on the floor need to find a new and permanent home. I bought a couple of clear plastic containers, filled and stacked them neatly in the back of the closet.
·       Dust and vacuum the entire room.  Check for cobwebs along the ceiling.  Since you never sleep in that room it might be a good idea to lie in the bed and see just what a guest will see.
·       Make the bed with fresh sheets   I like to lightly spritz my sheets with a lavender scented fabric spray.  Have a extra pillow and blanket within reach.
·       On the nightstand have an alarm clock, a good lamp to read by and maybe a couple of books that your think your guest might find interesting.  Also remember some tissues and a bottle of water.
·       Put out a few fresh towels.  I also include a small basket with small sizes of toothpaste, shampoo and mouthwash etc.  Just a nice touch.
·       Make a little room in the closet for hanging things.  Or if that is a problem you can hang an over the door hook with a couple of pretty hangers.
·       I also add a robe and slippers (check my website for a great waffle weave robe http://bit.ly/u89QMt ).  This becomes your small welcome gift and something your guest can take along when she leaves as a reminder of her visit.
·       Finally, nothing says welcome like a small bouquet of fresh flowers.  Nothing splashy or expensive.  A couple of blooms in a glass will do.
You are set.  If all of this sounds so good, you might even want to consider a night or two in your own guest room…a little escape without ever leaving the house.

The Rite of Fall

How abruptly the summer morphed into fall, or so it seems. I flew to Texas for the wedding of an old friend and in the short time I was gone September was over and the leaves began to change.

I live in a climate that has a warm season and a cold season, thus the need for two separate wardrobes. Once I feel that first cool day I know that it is time to pull out the turtlenecks and fleeces and put away the capris and tank tops. This process becomes my big closet clean, or as I like to call it "The Rite of Fall". I have actually gotten pretty good at this project and I thought I would share a few of my ideas for getting it done and doing it well.

The first thing you need to do is make the time. This is not a fifteen-minute task. I know how hard it is to give up a weekend afternoon, but I can assure you it will be time well spent. I typically allocate a few hours and make sure I have some great music to listen to while I work.

Begin by taking everything out of your closet and making piles on the bed. With the closet empty this is a great time to run the vacuum or dust the floor.

The hard work begins now- what to keep, store, and what to get rid of. Begin by going through each pile. You will need to be ruthless, and let's face it if you didn't wear it this summer what are the chances you will wear it next summer? If it is an emotional thing, something I call 'memory clothes' consider taking a picture. I actually know a gal who made a quilt out of her favorite old t-shirts and jeans that she could not bear to part with.

Make a 'donate' pile. There are so many charities that will gladly take lightly used clothing. You will feel good knowing someone less fortunate will benefit. If it is something that is really beat up, it makes more sense just to toss it.

Make sure things are washed and cleaned before you put them away. Because I have a large closet I store my clothes in clear plastic containers. I put like items with like items and label each container. The containers are then stored on the top shelves of the closet. (Keep it organized.. you might have to dig into them if you decide on a winter vacation to a tropical spot). If you don't have room to store containers move the summer clothes to the back of the closet, leaving them hanging and cover them with an old sheet to keep them fresh.

Next I dust off my shoes and put them back on a wooden shoe rack on the floor. I also try to keep my shoes in the original boxes with a label, but that much organization seldom works out for me.

Finally hang an air freshener in the closet, stand back and take a look at the progress you have made. Now the trick is to keep it looking that way. Good luck with that!! For that part you are on your own...

The Long Shadows

Have you noticed, this time of year, that the days grow shorter and the shadows grow longer? These are the subtle signs that summer is coming to an end. Oh how I hate to see it go. Time to put away the flip-flops and beach hairs, umbrellas, and coolers.

The only thing that perks me up is that I will soon be saying hello to some new fall clothes. It always amazes me how the stores seemingly convert their displays overnight from white-cropped pants and t-shirts to turtlenecks and boots. I am ready to buy a few new things for this season.

Not sure if you have noticed, but there seem to be a lot of strong fashion trends this year. I have spent the last few beach days scouring the fashion magazines for a few good and affordable things to buy so when I hit the stores I'll know exactly what I'm looking for.

Top of my list is a poncho or a cape. They are really hot and they are super versatile. I am thinking I would like a black and white tweed one to wear over some high waisted wide leg pants. After years of skinny pants the wider leg looks new and fresh. Not sure I can embrace the bell bottom, but they seem to be everywhere.

Colored pants are a must have too! Think yellow and red or orange.. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but I saw a pair of red corduroys with a crisp white blouse tucked in and let me tell you.. it looked cool. Oh yeah! I must add a new white shirt to the list. The shirts this season are longer and more overszied and can be worn out and belted.. another look I like.

I will also need something in snakeskin.. Maybe a cross body bag. If you really want to be a stand out, consider a leather skirt in faux snakeskin. Make sure it hits well below the knee. Some high heeled booties and you are off to fashionista city.

Some other trends to watch for are fur trims, choker necklaces, and wide cuff bracelets. Long coats that almost skin the floor are everywhere too. The must have colors of the season are deep rich blue, and shades of gray and wine.

You don't have to spend a fortune on any of these looks. You can find lots of bargains in the discount stores.. The key is to know what you are looking for. I hear that the famous Italian designer Missoni is doing a limited collection for Target that will be in stores in September. That is something not to be missed.

So enjoy these last days of summer fun and get yourself geared up for some serious shopping!!

Beach Baggin'

I love the beach life. It doesn’t much matter whether I am headed to the ocean, a lake, a river, or even an old rock quarry. I am happiest when I am out in the warmth of the sun with sand between my toes.

Going to the beach can be as simple as grabbing a towel and a bottle of sunscreen. For me however, it is a much more serious undertaking. My beach bag is packed with as much thought as a suitcase for a European holiday.

First and foremost is the “beach bag” itself. (This is tricky) It has to be big enough to fit all my stuff, lightweight, and above all have handles long enough to fit comfortably on my shoulder. My current favorite is a large lined straw tote with long leather straps and a wide opening that zips closed (keeps your stuff in and the sand out). I always look for something with a flat bottom so that is sits straight up in the sand right next to me. Take time to find the right bag and believe me you will be glad you did. While “looks” may matter, how the bag feels on your shoulder as you trek across the sand is far more important.

In my bag you will always find a combination of “need to haves” and “nice to haves”.

Need to Haves

· Sunscreen and lip balm. I love the spray on sunscreen, so I never have to touch anything sticky and greasy. Remember to reapply through out the day, especially after swimming or physical activity. Keep them in a clear bag away from the rest of your gear.

· Sunglasses. The last thing you want to do it burn your eyelids.

· Clear zippered bag for a phone and keys. Make sure to charge your phone.

· Hat or Scarf. You don’t want to ruin those fabulous new “highlights” you just got by over exposing your hair to the sun.

· A slimmed down wallet with a little cash and one credit card. You might need some cash for parking and ice cream. My favorite beach also has a great gift shop where I always manage to charge a few things.

· Water. A small lightweight thermos will keep it chilled. I keep my thermos at the very bottom of my bag and out of the sun.

Nice to Haves

Snacks. Nuts, fruit or anything that won’t melt. That means no chocolate!

· Book, Magazines, or E-reader.

· iPod

· Small bag with Band-Aids, Baby Wipes, Tissues, Wide toothed comb, and hair clip or band.

· Sweatshirt for when the sun gets low and the breeze picks up. It always amazes me how quickly the temperature can change near the water.

Now that you are all packed you can relax knowing you are organized and ready for some fun.

I keep my Beach Bag in the trunk of my car, always packed and ready for a fast escape to my favorite place on earth…the beach!

Living On Lemons

I am fortunate to come from a family where the women have lived well into their nineties and beyond. My Great Aunt Hattie left us last week at the age of 103. She was quite a force of nature, ahead of her time in many ways. As a mentor and confidante she nurtured and encouraged the younger women of her family to strive to be whatever they wanted long before that was the fashion. My Mother often speaks of how Aunt Hattie had encouraged her to forge a role for herself in life. Hattie always advised the brides in the family to “keep a little something aside” for themselves. By this she meant a private savings account, which she had and kept hidden from her husband of over fifty years. She was quite a lady and I will miss her.

When Hattie was 85 she came to live with us. My Mother was her favorite niece and they were devoted to each other. I learned a lot having Hattie around while I was growing up. She began every day with a glass of lemon water. It was a routine she followed as long as she could remember. I thought it quite odd and always resisted any attempt to try it for myself. Then about a year ago I began to read about the benefits of the lemon water. Maybe Hattie was on to something for all those years. Hey, she lived a long and healthy life.

Apparently the use of lemon water traces is origins to traditional Chinese medicine, which uses nature to prevent and treat health problems. Legend has it that the ancient Romans used lemon water as a cure for the poisons of the day. In the 21st this vitamin C rich citrus fruit that also contains potassium, magnesium and calcium, is touted as a way to detox your system and possibly aid in weight loss. Lemons have digestive properties that can ease heartburn, nausea and even hiccups. Since lemons clear toxins the first thing to benefit is your skin. Your skin will not look bright until your body is free of toxins. There are those that swear drinking lemon water will slow the aging process and even fight wrinkles. Other benefits may include the reduction of the symptoms of asthma and arthritis. Also a natural diuretic, lemon water is good for those with urinary tract infections.

Biggest bonus of all…. lemon water is calorie free, easy and inexpensive to make. You can drink it warm, cold, or hot. Real devotees like Aunt Hattie (and the Chinese) would have a warm glass of lemon water every morning. Hattie would have a second glass with ice later in the day.

When buying lemons look for a bright color and relatively thin skin. Keep your lemons at room temperature. Before cutting, roll the lemon on the counter a few times to release the juice. You should use the juice of one half lemon for each eight ounces of water. One final tip…. I wash the lemons before I use them with a mild soap.

Give this 'old' but tried and true gift of a nature a try. I can’t promise Aunt Hattie’s years but I can promise, a refreshing and healthy drink.

Favorite Tips For A Great 'Self Tan'

Okay, so you have done your research, bought your favorite self-tanner, and you're ready to go. Here are a few tips that I have learned from various articles and firsthand experience. While self-tanning has been around for sometime the products and results have improved greatly over the past few years, but to achieve that streak free sun kissed glow you have been craving, takes some time and a little planning.

Getting Ready- Plan to leave yourself one hour for the application and drying. Trying to rush this process will result in a not so great result. Wax, shave, or tweeze at least 24 hours in advance. If you think you might be sensitive to DHA (dihyroxyacetone), the main ingredient in most products you might want to test a small amount of your product on your inner arm the night before.

Exfoliate- Probably the most important part of tanning is assuring your skin is smooth and free of rough patches of old dry skin. My favorite method of exfoliation is dry brushing before you shower. A moderately firm bath brush is perfect. You can also use a mitt with an oil free wash. Just keep in mind any cleanser that or scrub that typically contains some oil can impede your results. That also means no lotion or deodorant after showering too.

Clothing Optional- I like to be completely bare when I tan, but I do have some friends that wear an old swimming suit.

Slow and Steady- Begin with your thighs, applying a large dollop. Smooth in tanner all the way down your legs to your ankles and to the tops of your feet. By the time you reach your feet the product should have thinned out. Next go to your middle, then to your shoulders and down your arms. Next do your face- remember to include your ears and the back of your neck! Your back can be a real challenage and you might want to invest in a long handled lotion applicator at your local drugstore.

Wash Your Hands- There is nothing worse than tanned cuticles or orange palms so wash your hands every five minutes. Once you lightly apply the tanner to the tops of your hands, wipe your palms and cuticles with a baby wipe or washcloth.

A Final Wipe- Go back with a soft dry cloth and buff the back of your heels, elbows, and knees to remove any excess from these areas. Little mistakes can be corrected by rubbing the area with a lemon half.

The Tan- It can take up to three hours for the color to totally develop so be patient. Wait 6 to 8 hours beofer showering.

Maintain- A self-tanner can last anywhere between 3 to 10 days. Avoid long showers and excessibe rubbing. Moisturize often. The dryer the skin the quicker the tan will flake and fade.

Useful Products- Check out Bathtub's Exfoliating Gloves at  http://bit.ly/kz4P3t. Our Lotion Applicator will help apply tanner to hard to reach places.. Check it out here.. http://bit.ly/l0qwYH

LAST BUT NOT LEAST- Most self-tanners DO NOT have sunscreen in them so do not forget to apply your sun screen as you would normally.

Good Luck!!

Getting Ready..

My dear friend Biny has opted for a destination wedding. So in a few short weeks I will be jetting off to Mexico to frolic with the happy couple and a hundred or so of their nearest and dearest. Of course I needed to go shopping, heaven forbid I did not have proper tropical attire. I could not resist one of the new long maxi dresses in shades of blue. -Just how chic will that look while sipping cocktails on the beach?!- Metallic sandals, long dangling earrings, and I was already feeling slightly woozy.

Reality bit me good when I hit the 'Swimsuit Department'. Why is the ultimate staple of summer the hardest and most stressful things to shop for? Why does trying on bathing suits make almost every woman I know want to head for the nearest cocktail lounge? I remember my Mom telling me that when she tried on swimwear, she always left her pantyhose on so her legs looked firm and tan. A good idea, but who wears pantyhose anymore?

Even before I reach the dreaded dressing room with the horrible lighting and fully length mirrors, I am faced with a zillion choices: bikinis, tankinis, strapless, one pieces, solids, printed, pleated, skirted, and the list goes on and on. I have read every single article on how to match the perfect swimsuit to my less than perfect figure so I have some ideas. 'Plunging' ahead, I picked five suits that I thought might work for me. After trying on the first two suits, I began to calm down and actually thought I looked pretty good in a black and white printed tankini. I paid for it and moved on.

Remembering how pale and winter white I looked in my new tankini, I thought of how much better I would look once I was tanned. But why wait? With so many self-tanning choices available, why not hit the beach with a nice 'healthy' glow?

A number of my friends have raved about the results of the professional spray tanning done in spas and salons. While the results are often very good, it is expensive, ranging from $25 to $75 for a single application. While the do it yourself home versions are far less convenient, they are more affordable and that is what I opted for.

Self-tanners come in may forms -Lotions, gels, mousses, creams, sprays, and even towelettes. The most important thing in picking a tanner is to select a quality product. My favorite is 'Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel'. At about $33 it is expensive but worth it. It is easy to apply, not stick, and dries quickly to a streak free tan.

Next time I will share a few tips I have learned (the hard way) about using self-tanners. Exfoliating by dry brushing is top of the list. Check out some of my exfoliating body brushes on BathtubBuzz.com

Glowing

There are many terms used to capture the essence of a bride as she comes down the aisle. The former Kate Middleton conjured up many of those adjectives last week as she married her Prince. Oh the dress was great and who doesn't love a tiara- even if it was a tiny one. For me, I cannot get past her amazing complexion. Glowing seems to be the word that suits it best. I have heard that the English climate is especially kind to the skin. All that moisture must be good for something.

Alas, those of us here in the states have to find other solutions to get that flawless look. Many dermatologists advise their clients to include a facial brush as part of their everyday beauty care. Long a staple of beauty regimes, it is a way to cleanse and exfoliate your face in one step.

Recently, I spent some time checking out the popular electronic complexion brushes. I hear raves about the results, soft clearer skin, but yikes are they expensive, about $200- and not in my budget. A quick check around town, and I have found a number of 'complexion brushes' that use no batteries and work just a well. I decided to try one and after five days I honestly notice a difference in the tone and appearance of my skin. It is softer and clearer.

Using a complexion brush is easy and inexpensive. Choose a complexion brush that is appropriate for your skin type. Generally the dryer your skin is the softer the brush needs to be. The idea is not to scrub your face until it is read and sore, but rather just enough to stimulate and exfoliate the top layer of dead skin. Done correctly it also feeds good, much like a relaxing massage for your face.

Once you have chosen the brush (you might want to speak to your dermatologist of esthetician for advice) pair it with your favorite facial cleanser. Softly and slowly scrub in circular motions beginning on your forehead moving down to your cheeks, nose and chin, and all the way back to your ears. Some people use it over the eyelids as well. Finally, rinse your face with cool water.

Be sure to rinse your brush thoroughly after each use and store it in a clean dry area. Tip: every week, mix one part vinegar with two parts water and dip your brush into the solution. Rinse thoroughly and your brush will stay clean and hygienic

I am sure you will become a fan of this method and I know you will see a difference; give it a week or two. Wish I could promise you a complexion like Kate, but I think that requires a home in England and a Prince too!

Sleeping Beauty

Having a few days off during the recent holiday has played havoc with my schedule and left me with way too little sleep. Looking in the mirror this morning was a jolting experience. Time to get back on the wagon. I need some serious shuteye.

Everyday we are bombarded with facts about how sleep, or the lack thereof, affects our bodies and our long and short term health. Not getting enough sleep has been linked to everything from obesity, high blood pressure, depression, to heartattacks. Then there is 'Beauty Sleep', the age old term for a good night's rest. Until recently, the idea of sleep improving or affecting our apprearance was pretty much a myth and never put to the test. But now, a new study done by scientist from Stockholm's Karolinska Institute and published in the prestigious British Medical Journal has confirmed the sleep/beauty connection.

In the study, sets of photos were taken of twenty-three men and women. The first set was taken after the subjects had eight hours of sleep, and the second set after having been awake for thirty-one continuous hours. Each subject maintained the same facial expression, was the same distance from the camera and didnt not wear makeup either time. A group of observers then reated each photo based on a series of quailites including health and attactiveness. The observers rated the sleep-deprived as less healthy, more tired, and less attractive than those who had recieved a full night's sleep. John Axelsson, on the researchers speaking of the  results said, "Sleep is the body's natural beauty treatment. It's probably more effective4 than any other treatment you culd buy."

Surprise.. a FREE beauty treatment. That is a pretty strong endorsement. I will be starting this regime tonight!

Quick Tip: It is very important to sleep in as close to complete darkness as possible. That said, it's not always easy to block our every stream of light using curtains, blinds, or drapes.. Particularly if you live in an urban area (or if your spouse has a different schedule than you do). In these cases, Sleep Masks can help to block our the remaining light. Check out my sleep masks here- Bathtub Buzz

See you later!!

Flatforms!

The world of fashion has taken some pity on our poor feet for spring and summer this year. After a bunch of seasons featuring sky-high stilettos there is a new shape in town. 2011 is the year of the 'Flatform'. Now just to be clear, this shoe is NOT flat, but it's a shoe you can walk in for hours. A 'flatform' is a shoe with a platform equal in height to the heel. Resulting in a high or nearly flat walking surface. It captures high style and comfort.. What a concept!! Don't forget that platforms elongate your legs for a very sexy look.

While most of the platforms are made from the traditional stacked wood, leather, or cork- that is where tradition ends. Look for cork that is covered with glitter, wood painted with whimsical flowers, or multicolored woven soles that look like confetti. You can find this shoe with high chunky ankle straps... If you are still hanging onto the whole gladiator thing. I am loving a simple slide of narrow turquoise leather bands with a gold metallic cork heel. Look for lots of colors and patterns, flowers and jewel accents, and even lace. The sky, or should I say the 'sidewalk', is the limit. Just make sure you pick some that are fun and sassy.

I hope you have tried my foot soak from last week's blog. I have been faithfully dunking my feet and they are looking much better. I have added a foot scrub to my regimen too. After looking a the prices of scrubs in the stores, I've decided to try a quick and easy homemade recipe. With what I have saved, I can almost buy another pair of shoes!

This one is my favorite, but you can and should come up with your own unique concoction. Remember the best cooks seldom follow a recipe!

BROWN SUGAR SCRUB

1/2 cup of Brown Sugar
1/4 cup of Almond Oil
1/4 cup of Liquid Hand Soap
1/4 cupe of Vanilla Extract

I'm off to the mall!! We'll talk soon!

Breaking Out The Flip-Flops

It is my favorite time of the year…. the warm weather is here. For those of you that didn’t suffer through the winter that “wouldn’t end”, you probably never put your flip-flops away. For the rest of us, it has been a long wait. Today was the day I rescued them from their hibernation in the back of a dark closet. I dusted them off and slipped them on with great joy.

Unfortunately my feet are hardly flip flop ready. I have gotten the occasional pedicure over the last few months, but except for that, I have virtually ignored my feet. I wonder just how much you attention you pay to the care of your feet? Probably not a lot and no…buying shoes for them doesn't count.

Our feet are the whipping boys of the body. For every mile we walk 200,000 to 300,000 pounds of stress bears down on our tootsies. By the time we’re 50, most of us have walked 75,000 miles. That’s a lot of pounding for two narrow islands of 26 bones and more than 30 joints. Considering this, I've decided that my feet deserved a little respect.

Why not start with a nice soak. In doing some online research I came upon an ingredient I remember my Granny using to soak her feet….Epsom Salt. Epsom salt is made of the mineral magnesium sulfate. When magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin, such as in a bath, it draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous system, reduces swelling, relaxes muscles, and is a natural emollient, exfoliator, and much more. Apparently my Granny knew what she was doing. Fast-forward to the 21st century and here is a brilliant way to begin a “new foot” ritual. Experts recommend that you soak your feet three times a week.

1. Use a large container that is big enough to fit both of your feet comfortably in and be adequately covered by water. Fill the container with warm water. Make sure to use enough water to cover the feet and a bit of the ankles.

2. Add 5 or 6 tablespoons of Epsom Salt to the warm water and gently stir with your hand to thoroughly mix the salts and the water.

3. Add a few drops of any essential oil you love to create a spa like experience by incorporating the sense of smell. I used Peppermint oil today and it was yummy.

4. Soak your feet for 15 minutes in the oil infused water.

5. Gently dry the feet with a small hand towel and apply your favorite lotion.

I guarantee not only will your feet begin to look better they will feel great. Stay tuned for more tips for the feet in the coming days.

BTW Epsom Salt can be found in drug and grocery stores.

Spa for Men

We certainly have come a long way from the time when the words ‘spa’ and ‘men’ would not be used in the same sentence.  Not all that long ago the ‘spa’ was a place where a man went to buy a gift certificate for his girlfriend or wife.  The world has certainly changed.  Did you know that about 35% of all ‘spa’ clients are men and this segment of spa goers grows every year? I guess I should not have been surprised. I have noticed how many men I see at spa and the nail salon too.  ‘Mani’ anyone?
Today’s spas have become gender-neutral places.  The surroundings are designed to be places where both men and women feel comfortable.   Gone are the frills, pink floral, and waterfalls; replaced with soft neutral colors, sleek, and modern designs.  Most spas now have robes and slippers just for men and tables long enough to prevent their legs from hanging off the table while getting a massage, as well as scent appropriate products that don’t leave him smelling of vanilla with a hint of jasmine.  If your spa does not have these man friendly things, find a new one that does.
You already know the value of a good spa treatment and you have a man in your life that deserves and could you use a spa gift.  The question is how to make him appreciate your gesture.  The answer depends on what kind of man you are sending to the spa.  Here are some typical types:

The Pleasure Seeker - Does he love that you are willing to indulge his every need?  Does he look for fun and delight in every experience and avoid pain at all costs?  If so, I think you have a pleasure seeker in your life.  Here is a perfect opportunity to give him something he loves… more pleasure.  You might consider a spa experience that incorporates his senses with an aromatherapy massage and a herbal facial.  He is the type that might find a way to prolong the experience for the entire day.  Just remember to leave you cell phone number so they will know where to call to have him picked up.
The Competitor – He will let you make all the decisions, as long you don’t stand in front of the TV screen.  To get some relief from the constant roar of the TV, consider the speed option play that involves a drive right to the spa door remembering to guard against any retreat by quickly peeling rubber as you make your retreat.  You might include something to deal with those chewed up nails. Once they get him in a robe and on the table the ‘game’ will be over.
The Metro sexual - Does your man have more clothes in his closet than you do?  This is a man that pioneered the spa experience for men.  He will be willing to spend both time and money at the spa.  No need to rope this guy in.   Treat him to the most innovative and exotic treatment your spa has to offer.  I’m thinking a Chocolate Sugar Scrub or Seaweed Wrap.
The Woodsman – He will boast of going four days without a shower while on a backpacking trip.  He is all about nature and practicality.  This guy will enjoy a practical spa treatment…like “my feet are so dry and cracked I could use a pedicure so they don’t stick to the carpet” He also likes all things technical.  Give him some info on the very tech- like experience of the Shiatsu massage.
The Stop the Clock – He turned 40 and can’t stop talking about it.  Is he constantly complaining about the failings of various body parts?  Some men just go over the edge once they turn 40 and spend a lot of time focusing on father time.   Have you heard about anti-aging facials?  Play right into his vanity and send him post haste to the spa.  I guarantee he will become a regular seeking out any and all treatments designed to ward off the effects on the clock.
The Superhero – He just needs to relax.  He spends most of his time carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.  You need to give him the opportunity to relax… if only so he can get more things done.  It will be a big challenge to get him to spa land.  Ask him to trust you… just this once. Then find a men’s spa where he can get just a shave for starters and add a facial on the sly.  Once he knows he can control the experience he will be scheduling his spa treatments along with his oil changes.

Since we all know how amazing a spa experience is I have a feeling you can manage to get your boyfriend or husband there.  I would suggest that you book his first visit as a gift to celebrate a special occasion, that way he will look at it as something special. Once you get him there the first time, I am pretty sure he will want to come back for more.  In no time at all I bet he is looking for space in the shower to put his loofah and back strap!
Good Luck.  I would really love to hear about your spa experiences… both yours and your man’s.   Leave me a message!

Spa Scents..

Bizzie Buzz here with thoughts on Spa Scents…

I did manage to get to the Spa last weekend and let me tell you I really needed it. As you know I have been spending some time thinking about ways to extend and expand the Spa experience at home. I have been paying particular to all the things that make these trips so pleasurable for me.

In a nod to Spring I decided to forgo my favorite Hot Stone treatment for an Aromatherapy Massage. Obviously this massage is all about the idea of scents and how they affect our well-being. As I relaxed and inhaled a lovely mix of essential oils (in this case lavender and neroli) I began to think of the real impact our sense of smell has on us.

Almost all living things depend upon their sense of smell for their very existence. Our nostrils are attached to a part of our brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules, during an aromatherapy massage, messages are transmitted to the limbic system. The limbic system affects heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. Scents can trigger intense feelings. Pretty powerful stuff!

The memory of a scent can hold all aspects of a moment including sounds, sights, faces, and thoughts. In Greek mythology each of the gods had his or her own scent that the Greeks described as part of a god’s 'presence' while the Egyptians referred to the use of scents as 'divine perspiration'.

Ok, enough of the science. For me a great way to extend and replicate this Spa experience is to purchase the massage oils used in my Spa’s signature treatments. The massage oil can be used as moisturizing oil after a bath to enhance relaxation and create a sense of calm. You can also create your own treatment by using the oil to give yourself a head to toe warm message before crawling under the covers for the night.

If you find the products at your Spa too pricey, buy your own essential oils and mix and match to create a delicious blend. (Think of it as your “house blend”). Each essential oil has different healing properties. Some of the most popular are:

Calming – chamomile and lavender

Uplifting – ylang ylang, clary sage, rose, and neroli

Energizing – rosemary

Cleansing – rosemary

Decongesting – eucalyptus, pine, and tea tree

There are many different things that can encourage and expand the relaxation of your Spa days. Keep thinking of what it is you enjoy most and treat yourself to something that can help duplicate that experience in your very own bathroom.

One final thing…to create an authentic Spa experience in you own bathroom, remember to dress the part. What is the first thing you do when you go to the Spa? You undress and slip into a comfy robe and slippers. Why not set aside a special robe and slippers to be used only for these occasions?

I have some great ideas on Spa attire that you are sure to love!

Spa Extenders Part Deux…Herbal Steam Facial

Daylight Savings time arrived last weekend and my thoughts immediately went to summer and all the good things being out of doors will bring.  That extra hour of daylight perks me up and gets me going. I haven’t gotten to the spa since I last wrote. Hoping maybe this weekend if I can squeeze it in between, a baby shower and a 50th Anniversary party for my Grandparents. I need some “me time”. If not I will go to my home spa bag of tricks and pull out one of my favorites…a Herbal Steam Facial.
An easy to do steam facial treatment can quickly and easily give you a bit of that missing summer glow. Moist heat hydrates your skin and boosts circulation bringing oxygen to your face. It can also promote skin clarity and softness. A home steam treatment is easy to do and takes only a few supplies. With little effort you will see some really noticeable results.
You will need a towel, a large saucepan, a stove, fresh chopped herbs and some essential oils. (Herbs and oils are nice to have but you can achieve good results without them)
Begin by gathering all your supplies. Next thoroughly cleanse your face and neck.  Fill the large saucepan with water and put in on the stove to boil. You can add the herbs, anything such as thyme, rosemary or sage and a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I like lavender). Once the water has boiled remove the pot from the heat and place on your kitchen counter. Bend over the pot and drape a hand towel over your head to capture the steam. Your face should be no closer than 12 inches from the steam. Use your best judgment as to how close you want to get. You can set a timer for about five minutes and keep your face immersed in the steam for until the timer goes off. Pat your face and neck dry with your hand towel. Finally apply your favorite mask or moisturizer to both your face and neck.
Look at your skin in the mirror and see the difference. While the herbs and essential oils are not “need to haves” I think they are really “nice to haves” and certainly worth the few minutes it takes to get them together. A little aromatherapy adds to the feel good factor.
You are now ready for a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Put your feet up and dream of those long days of summer.
Talk soon…

Going 'Green'? Try the Bamboo Advantage

Bamboo- woody tropical grass having hollow woody stems.

Who would have ever thought that bamboo would be a common material in products? There are tons of products that use bamboo because of how 'green' and all-natural it is. Bath exfoliators are one of these products.

There are four advantages with using bamboo products.

1) Bamboo is a 100% biodegradable textile. As a natural cellulose fiber; it can be biodegraded by soil and sunshine, and the decomposition doesn't cause any pollution to the environment.

2) It's all natural and anit-bacterial.Who would have thought bamboo to be a nautral anti-bacterial fiber.
3) It's recyclable. Since bamboo shoots grow very quickly, bamboo is great to use instead of our precious resources.

4)  It's hypo-allergenic. If you have sensitive skin like me, bamboo textiles are your best choice. Bamboo's organic and natural properties make it non-irritating.

So what does this have to do with Bath & Spa products?

Many of OUR bath brushes, exfoliators, and sponges are made from 100%bamboo.

If you are looking to go 'green', try out our Bamboo Exfoliating Handstrap. It's a great way to slough dead skin cells- leaving your skin renewed, refreshed, and radiant.

Dry Brushing

Recently I sat next to a woman at a dinner party and I could not take my eyes off the skin on her arms, on a cold winter night she was wearing a sleeveless dress while I covered my arms up in a long sleeved turtleneck.  Her skin looked like silk, all glowy and soft. I got up the courage to ask about her beauty regime and she told me she owed her amazing skin to “dry brushing”.   Determined to find out what this was all about and make this my own little secret I did some research.
What a surprise to find out the ancient Greeks and Romans did this.  Asian woman and men have been doing it forever and now in the US and Europe it is hot hot hot! Models and all the glam girls are hopping on this new thing, which remove layers of clogged and dead skin…. the ULTIMATE exfoliation.   So much for a secret.
You begin by buying a long handled brush made of natural bristles.  (nylon and synthetics are too sharp and may scratch your skin).  Look for boar bristles or those made from plants. You should probably begin with a soft brush and as your skin tolerates it move on to something firmer.  Before your bath or shower gently dry brush your entire body using a soft circular motion…from head to toe.  Pay special attention to those really dry spots like elbows, knees, and feet.  It feels wonderful and relaxing- much like a massage.
Rinse off and shower or bathe as usual. You will also find that this method also makes your skin more ready to receive any lotions or oils you may apply after your shower or bath.  Many say it also improves circulation.
Avoid any areas that are sensitive or have broken skin.  If you have any serious skin issues (eczema, psoriasis, or acne) check with you Dr. before you consider if this is right for you.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

"Whether you are in the cold of the Northeast or in the warmth of the south, February signifies a time of love, warmth and friendship. Valentine’s Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on how meaningful our relationships are, and to appreciate those we love. And, there is no better way to show your love than to gift a loved one with a little TLC and pampering."- Sheer Balance

-We could not agree enough! What kind of girl wouldn't mind a foot massage or even a mani/pedi as a Valentine's gift?! Hey- Even a guy would like that!

These are our 5 top AT HOME inexpensive spa gifts for your love ones this Valentine's day!

1)- Give your love one a personal back massage. Start off with some massaging oil- buy from the store or make our own. Use a Wood Hand Massager to massage kinks and tight spots on the back.

2)- Treat someone to an inexpensive manicure. A Personal Manicure Kit would be very handy. Clip nails- then shape with a nail file. Use a cuticle pusher and clip away hang nails. Follow up by using a hand lotion.

3)- Relax with your loved one and take a romantic spa bath. Filled the tub up with warm water. Add your favorite bath salts, bubble bath, or bath oils. Light some candles and play soft music. To be more comfortable- use a Bath Pillow to support and rest your head.

4)- If you're single this Valentine's day- don't forget about YOURSELF! Treat yourself to a mini-massage. Use a Cellulite Bath Brush to scrub away dead skin, massage, and fight cellulite on your hips, thighs, and buns.

5)- Last but not least- Give yourself a spa pedicure. Use a Pumice Brush to fight cracked, dry, and callused feet. Then clip toe nails then use a nail file to shape nails. Don't forget to moisturize! Use Moisturizing Socks to help keep your feet feeling soft and smooth all the time.
